What is the underlying philosophy? Over the internet, your users can easily and at low costs log in on your systems. Typically, your users will identify themselves with a username and password, or a stronger form of authentication, e.g. with tokens, and a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection is created. The security normally focuses on making sure that the server is indeed the server it is claiming to be. For this, a digital certificate is often used on the server side. But should the server not also know that the client is indeed the client it is claiming to be? Otherwise, there is a chance that data is intercepted by what is known as a ‘man in the middle’, pretending to be the client.
To prevent misuse and security breaches when your users log onto your company network over the internet, a Digital Client Certificate is the proper solution. With this certificate in place, both client and server can be identified properly, and with the add-on of a hardware signature check during logon, the certificate could even replace your token solution completely.
